First Female APS President Bestows $60,000 to the Society Through a Charitable Remainder Trust

First Female APS President Bestows $60,000 to the Society Through a Charitable Remainder Trust

A member of the APS since 1949, Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen was hugely involved in service to the Society. She was the 48th APS President and the first female to serve in that position. To honor her contributions to physiology and service to the Society, the APS established the Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award in 2004. The award recognizes and honors members who have made outstanding contributions to physiological research and have also demonstrated dedication and commitment to excellence in training of young physiologists.

Having two renowned physiologists as parents, Bodil was practically destined to become one herself. In fact, her father, August Krogh, was awarded the 1920 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for his discovery of the capillary motor regulating mechanism." Bodil was, in her own right, a prominent comparative physiologist who studied water metabolism and kidney function in a variety of animals. To learn more about Bodil's life and career, please view her interview for the APS Living History of Physiology series.

In December 2005, Bodil established a charitable remainder trust naming the Society as the beneficiary. A charitable remainder trust is a gift that provides fixed retirement income to an individual for life after which the remaining assets go to the chosen beneficiary. This gift endowed the Bodil M. Schmidt-Nielsen Distinguished Mentor and Scientist Award. The APS greatly appreciates all gifts, including planned gifts such as charitable remainder trusts. For more information on how to establish a charitable remainder trust with the Society, please visit apsgiving.org or contact the Development Office at donations@the-aps.org or call (301) 634-7406.
